Chakra Spread
The Chakra Spread provides a profound energetic inventory by aligning tarot with the seven primary energy centers of the body. Moving from the grounding root to the transcendent crown, this structured layout illuminates where life force flows freely and where conscious attention can restore archetypal balance.
Introduction
The chakra system offers a map of human experience through seven energy centers, each governing different aspects of life from survival to spirituality. When these centers are balanced, energy flows freely; when blocked, patterns emerge that affect our lives in recognizable ways.
This spread aligns the tarot with the chakra system, drawing one card for each energy center. The result is a complete energetic inventory, revealing which areas of life are flowing, which are blocked, and where attention could restore balance.
You don’t need to believe literally in chakras to benefit from this spread. The system provides a useful framework for examining different dimensions of experience, from the practical to the transcendent.

Reading the Spread
Vertical Flow
Look at the column as an energy flow. Notice whether there is a break anywhere — a card that seems blocked while others move freely. Consider whether the lower chakras are providing a stable foundation for the upper ones. Pay attention to the overall distribution: is there too much energy concentrated in one area while another feels depleted?
Upper and Lower Balance
Lower chakras (1-3): Physical, emotional, personal Upper chakras (5-7): Expressive, intuitive, spiritual Heart (4): The bridge
Consider whether there is balance between upper and lower dimensions. Someone with predominantly upper-chakra cards might be living too much in the realm of ideas and spirit while neglecting the body and practical matters, while predominantly lower-chakra energy could suggest a focus on material concerns at the expense of expression and inner vision. The heart card reveals how well these two dimensions are being integrated.
Pattern Recognition
Notice patterns across the reading. Multiple Wands suggest fire energy — action and creativity — which resonates with the solar plexus and sacral centers. Multiple Cups point toward water energy and emotional themes, connecting to the sacral and heart chakras. Multiple Swords carry air energy and mental processes, relating to the third eye and throat. Multiple Pentacles ground the reading in earth energy, linked to the root. When Major Arcana cards appear, they suggest significant spiritual lessons unfolding in that particular energy center.
Working With This Spread
When to Use It
This spread works well as a general check-in, offering a complete energy assessment across all areas of life. It is especially useful when you feel off-balance but cannot quite identify the source. You might also draw it when beginning new practices — to establish a baseline — or during seasonal transitions such as solstices and equinoxes. After major life changes, the chakra spread can reveal where integration is still needed.
Sample Reading
Question: “How is my energy flowing right now?”
Cards Drawn:
- Root: King of Pentacles
- Sacral: Eight of Swords
- Solar Plexus: The Chariot
- Heart: Two of Cups
- Throat: The Hermit
- Third Eye: The Moon
- Crown: The Star
Reading:
Root (King of Pentacles): Your foundation is solid. You feel secure, masterful in the material world, grounded. This is a strong base.
Sacral (Eight of Swords): A block. Creative and emotional energy feels trapped, restricted, bound. Despite your solid foundation, the flow upward is constrained here.
Solar Plexus (The Chariot): Despite the sacral block, your willpower is strong. You’re forcing energy through by sheer determination, achieving through will rather than flow.
Heart (Two of Cups): The heart is open and connected. There’s partnership, love, emotional exchange. The heart seems to bypass the sacral issue.
Throat (The Hermit): Communication is more internal than external right now. You’re in a reflective mode, perhaps not sharing as openly as you might. This isn’t necessarily blocked, but quiet.
Third Eye (The Moon): Intuition is active but murky. There’s deep psychic sensitivity, but also confusion, illusion, things not yet clear. Trust the process.
Crown (The Star): Despite the complexities below, spiritual connection is strong. Hope, faith, and restorative energy pour down from above.
Synthesis: You’re well-grounded (Root) and spiritually connected (Crown), but there’s a block at the sacral level (Eight of Swords) that’s affecting creative and emotional flow. You’re compensating with willpower (Chariot), and the heart remains open (Two of Cups). Work on releasing what binds the sacral chakra—guilt, restriction, creative fear—to restore full flow.

Based on which chakras show blocks, consider:

Heart: Forgiveness work, compassion meditation, receiving practice, grief processing
Throat: Journaling, singing, honest conversations, creative writing, deep listening
Third Eye: Meditation, dream work, intuition exercises, visualization practice
Crown: Meditation, prayer, meaning exploration, surrender practice, service
